We often see events like this in headlines and on social media, and the unfortunate reality is that these events can happen with no warning, in any setting, to anyone. Law enforcement recommends the below actions, in that order, for the highest likelihood of surviving an Active Shooter attack.
RUN – as a first resort.
- If there is a path to escape, evacuate.
- Evacuate whether others agree or not.
- Leave belongings behind.
- Help others escape if possible.
- Prevent others from entering the area.
HIDE – if you can’t escape the area.
- Lock and/or barricade the door.
- Silence your cell phone.
- Hide behind large objects.
- Remain quiet.
FIGHT – as a last resort.
- Attempt to incapacitate the shooter.
- Act with physical aggression.
- Improvise, using items in your workplace as weapons.
- Commit to your actions.
